Gervonta Davis has changed his mind about fighting Lamont Roach Jr. again. The WBA lightweight champion now wants a rematch as soon as possible, maybe even in May.
Davis and Roach fought to a majority draw earlier this month at the Barclays Center in New York. Many fans thought Davis would win easily, but Roach put up a great fight.
The bout had a controversial moment in the ninth round. Davis took a knee and went to his corner. The referee started to count but then stopped and didn't call it a knockdown. If Roach had gotten a 10-8 round there, he would have won the fight and become the new champion.
In the end, one judge scored it 115-113 for Davis, while the other two had it 114-114. It was a close call for Davis, who was defending his title against Roach, who moved up from super-featherweight for this fight.
Right after the fight, Davis wasn't sure about a rematch. He said:
"I'm not sure. I'm definitely not sure. It probably won't be this year. It's definitely the one I want next but it's not going to be next."
But now, Davis has changed his tune. He recently tweeted:
"And say no more. I'm pushing for the rematch The rematch can be soon too…..like [the] end of May."
It looks like fans won't have to wait long to see these two in the ring again. Reports say the rematch is already a "done deal."
This quick turnaround shows how much the first fight surprised everyone. Davis, known as "Tank," usually dominates his opponents. But Roach gave him a real challenge, and now Davis wants to prove himself again.
The rematch will give both fighters a chance to settle the score. For Davis, it's about defending his title more convincingly. For Roach, it's another shot at becoming a champion in a new weight class.
Boxing fans will be watching closely to see if Davis can show why he's called "Tank," or if Roach can finish what he started in their first meeting.
