Terence Crawford scored the Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach Jr fight in favor of the challenger. The welterweight champion shared his thoughts on the controversial bout that ended in a majority draw earlier this month.
WBA lightweight champion Davis and Roach met in a closely contested fight. Two judges scored it 114-114, while the third had it 115-113 for Davis. The result sparked debate, especially due to a moment in the ninth round when Davis took a knee but wasn't counted down.
Crawford spoke about the fight on The Big Podcast With Shaq. He didn't mince words about the controversial incident.
"1000% it should have been called a knockdown if you take a knee in any scenario in the fight. I don't know if he had grease in his eye or what, I know he took a knee and that should have been called a knockdown."
The referee started a count but then stopped, a decision Crawford criticized. If scored as a 10-8 round, Roach would have become the new champion.
But even without that knockdown, Crawford felt Roach did enough to win. He explained his reasoning:
"Roach was the busier man. Roach was the sturdier man. Roach landed more shots than Tank. Roach showed he wanted it more in the last rounds."
Crawford broke down the fight round by round. He saw Roach winning the early rounds slightly, with both fighters not very active. Davis then took control in the middle rounds. But Roach showed more desire in the final stages.
The former undisputed welterweight champion called it a close fight overall. He praised both fighters for their technical skills.
Roach's promoter claims a rematch is a done deal for this summer. Meanwhile, Crawford is gearing up for his own challenge. He'll move up two weight divisions to face Canelo Alvarez at super-middleweight in September.
