Gervonta Davis took a knee against Lamont Roach in their recent fight, and people can't stop talking about it. The bout, which took place at Barclays Center in New York earlier this month, ended in a majority decision draw.
Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, faced a tougher challenge than expected from Roach. The fight got real interesting in the ninth round when 'Tank' went down on one knee. The referee started counting but then stopped, deciding it wasn't a knockdown. This move left Roach pretty upset.
The scorecards came back 115-113 for Davis and two 114-114 draws. If that ninth round had been scored 10-8 for Roach, he would've walked away with the WBA belt.
Top trainer Robert Garcia shared his thoughts on what went down. Garcia, who's won Trainer of the Year and works with stars like Vergil Ortiz and Bam Rodriguez, didn't buy Davis' story about grease in his eyes.
"He was in there with a better man than him and kind of lost it a little. Taking the knee because he was frustrated. There was no other question than that's what happened."
Garcia made these comments during an interview with Pro Box TV.
After the fight, Roach's team filed an appeal with the New York State Athletic Commission. They hoped to change the result, but the commission rejected it. The original decision will stand.
What's next for these two? We'll probably see them back in the ring together this summer for a rematch. Boxing fans will want to keep an eye out for that one.
