Wladimir Klitschko wants to step back into the boxing ring. The former heavyweight champion has his eyes set on a comeback, but only for a world title fight.
Klitschko, now 48, last fought in 2017 when Anthony Joshua defeated him. For a decade, he ruled as the heavyweight king, defending his titles 25 times. Now, he's looking to make history by breaking George Foreman's record as the oldest world heavyweight champion.
Tom Loeffler, Klitschko's longtime promoter, shared some insights about the potential return. He told The Ring Magazine:
"Wladimir is such a historic figure. I don't want to speculate for Wladimir, but my understanding is that he does want to fight for a title. If anyone can make a comeback [at his age], it's Wladimir. He's in tremendous shape every time I see him, much like he was when he went on a historic 25-title defense run."
The heavyweight division has changed since Klitschko's retirement. Oleksandr Usyk stands as the clear number one, having defeated Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Daniel Dubois. Usyk became the undisputed champion by beating Fury and currently holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles, having recently given up the IBF belt.
Daniel Dubois now holds the IBF title. He's bounced back impressively from his loss to Usyk, stopping Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic before beating Anthony Joshua in September.
A fight between Klitschko and Usyk seems unlikely due to their shared Ukrainian heritage. Dubois might be a possible target for Klitschko if he decides to end his retirement.
Klitschko's return to the ring will depend on securing a world title fight. His dedication to staying in shape suggests he's serious about this comeback attempt. The boxing world will watch closely to see if the former champion can make history once again.
