The fight was announced earlier this month after people talked about it for a long time. ESPN confirmed the match is happening, and fans are excited to see these two great boxers in the ring together.
Before the Crawford fight, Canelo has another important match coming up. He'll fight William Scull on May 3, 2024, for the IBF super middleweight championship. This fight is part of Canelo's new four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. If Canelo wins, he'll have all the major titles in his weight class.
Abel Sanchez, who used to train Gennady Golovkin, doesn't think Crawford has much of a chance against Canelo. He told KO Artist Sports in an interview:
"It's a ridiculous fight because, I said it a while ago, Crawford is a great fighter but he's been the same fighter from 135 to 147, he's still the same fighter, he hasn't changed anything to make him viable at the bigger weights, but Canelo has."
Sanchez added:
"Crawford hasn't been destroying his opponents, he destroyed one who was a shell of his former self, but Canelo is destroying everybody that he fights, destroying them, but Crawford's not. Yes, it's a good money fight but not a real fight."
Canelo has been doing really well lately, winning all his recent fights in a big way. Crawford, who's 37 and from Omaha, has won world titles in four different weight classes. He's trying to win in a fifth weight class against Canelo.
Crawford's last fight was against Israil Madrimov for the WBA light middleweight championship. He won on points, but some people think he might not hit as hard in higher weight classes.
The September fight will be for Canelo's unified super middleweight championship. It's a big deal for both fighters and for boxing fans everywhere.
