Caleb Plant, a former opponent of Canelo Alvarez, has shared his thoughts on the potential fight between Canelo and Terence Crawford. The bout is reportedly set for September 2023 in Las Vegas, with an official announcement expected soon.
Crawford aims to make history by jumping up two weight divisions to challenge for Canelo's super-middleweight titles. If successful, he'll become a five-weight world champion. Canelo has never lost at super-middleweight and became the undisputed champion in the division after beating Plant in November 2021, though he's since been stripped of the IBF belt.
In an interview with Fighthype, Plant offered his assessment of the matchup:
"Terence is not a regular guy. He's special. Canelo is a top notch fighter, a world class fighter who is still near the top of the pound-for-pound list, so it's exciting."
Plant gave Crawford a real chance in the fight, praising his versatility and strength:
"I give Crawford a chance. Terence is freakishly strong. He has good crack and can fight both ways, orthodox and southpaw. He can fight at mid-range, close-range, outside, he can fight going both ways."
Despite his confidence in Crawford's abilities, Plant acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the outcome:
"It's a big question mark on the end of it though so that's why we are all excited for the bell to ring and we can find out first hand."
ESPN reports that the fight is in the final stages of negotiation. However, there's a possibility that Canelo may first be part of a surprising matchup in May, adding another layer of intrigue to the boxing calendar.
As the boxing world eagerly awaits official confirmation, the potential Canelo-Crawford showdown promises to be one of the most exciting fights of the year.
