Fury, known as "The Gypsy King," shared the news on social media. He said:
Hi everybody, I'm going to make this short and sweet. I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing, it has been a blast, I've loved every single minute of it and I'm going to end with this; Dick Turpin wore a mask.
This announcement came as a surprise to many fans. Just a few months earlier, in October 2024, Fury had talked about fighting until he was 50. He said he wanted to make as much money as possible and would keep going "until the wheels fall off."
Fury has always been open about how boxing helps him stay mentally healthy. He's also very rich, so he doesn't need to fight for money anymore.
Frank Warren, Fury's longtime promoter, thinks this retirement might be for real. He told DAZN:
At the moment, it's false [that he will fight again]. I say that genuinely. Tyson is a very unique guy and this is how it is. I've spoken to him a couple of times. I've not bothered him and I've certainly not spoke to him about fighting again. If he does, that will be his choice.
Warren added that Fury is happy and in a good place right now. He said:
He's a very, very wealthy guy. He doesn't need financially to fight. If he does fight it will be because he's got a fighting heart … For me, thats gonna be the thing. Can he walk away from the sport? He says he has and, at this moment in time, he's said to me he's really in a good place and he's very happy. That for me is very important.
It's worth noting that Fury has said he was retiring before, only to come back. But this time, people close to him seem to think he might mean it.
If Fury does decide to fight again, many think it would be for a big "Battle of Britain" match against Anthony Joshua. For now, though, it looks like the Gypsy King has hung up his gloves for good.
