Tyson Fury thinks Deontay Wilder should hang up his gloves. The former heavyweight champion shared his thoughts on Wilder's comeback plans in a recent interview.
Fury and Wilder fought three times between 2018 and 2021. Their first match ended in a draw, but Fury won the next two fights. Since then, both fighters have faced challenges. Fury lost his WBC belt to Oleksandr Usyk in 2023. Wilder has fought three times since his last loss to Fury, winning one but losing the other two.
Now, Wilder plans to return to the ring in April. Many in the boxing world think it's time for 'The Bronze Bomber' to step away from the sport. Fury agrees with this sentiment.
In an interview with the "Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru & Henry" podcast, Fury said:
"Being truthful I'd like to see poor old Deontay retire from boxing. When I beat Wilder he was 44-0 with 43 KOs and he KO'd the guy who went the distance with him in the rematch. So that means he knocked out every single person he ever faced and obviously lost the three fights to me. We took a lot of years out of each other's life. Even when he's come back and had a couple of fights since, he's only a shadow of his former glory. The only thing left about Deontay Wilder is his name."
Fury pointed out that before their fights, Wilder had an impressive record of 44 wins with 43 knockouts. He believes their intense battles took a toll on both of them.
The rivalry between Fury and Wilder started when Fury returned to boxing after dealing with mental health and addiction issues. Their first fight ended in a draw, even though Fury got knocked down in the 12th round.
For their next two fights, Fury changed his strategy. He boxed on the front foot, overwhelming Wilder and winning both matches.
Fury has decided to retire after losing twice to Usyk. He thinks Wilder should follow suit, saying Wilder is "only a shadow of his former glory."
