Canelo Alvarez didn't listen to Oscar De La Hoya's advice about fighting Floyd Mayweather. De La Hoya recently shared this story during an interview on Club Shay Shay.

De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions guided Canelo's career for nearly a decade. They started working together early in Canelo's career, and in 2011, Canelo became a world champion under their guidance.

De La Hoya told Club Shay Shay that he advised Canelo against fighting Mayweather. He said to the young boxer:

"Do not fight Floyd because you're too young and have no experience."

But Canelo, who was 23 at the time, didn't agree. De La Hoya remembered Canelo's response:

"I can take on Floyd I'm the very best."

The fight happened in September 2013. Mayweather won by a points decision, putting on a convincing performance. De La Hoya commented on the outcome:

"Guess what, you got schooled. It wasn't even close."

Today, De La Hoya and Canelo don't get along. Their relationship ended in 2020, and things got heated at a press conference in 2023. They had to be separated on stage when Canelo fought Golden Boy fighter Jaime Munguia. After that, they traded insults and even threatened legal action.

Now, Canelo might fight another undefeated American star. There are reports that a fight with Terence Crawford is set for September 2025. De La Hoya has already shared his thoughts on how that fight might go.
