Roy Jones Jr. shared his thoughts on a possible fight between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez. The former pound-for-pound best boxer thinks Canelo has the edge, but he doesn't count Crawford out.
Crawford and Canelo are both four-weight world champions, but there's a 14-pound gap between their current divisions. Crawford wants to move up to face Canelo, who's warming up to the idea after initially dismissing it.
Jones Jr. told FightHype.com:
"I like Terence, but I'm going to lean towards 'Canelo' with his size early but if he lets Terence get into the fight Terence going to be a problem and if Terence can deal with the size, Terence will beat him."
The Florida native pointed out that Canelo's size gives him an advantage at the start. But if Crawford can handle the bigger man and settle into the fight, he'll cause trouble for the Mexican star.
Jones Jr. also stressed the importance of power in this potential matchup:
"That's what I'm saying, we don't know until we see Terence get hit, cause we haven't seen him get hit with that power. That's the deciding factor. If you can change Bud's fight plan you got a chance of beating him, but if you can't hurt him, you can't change his fight plan, and you got problems."
He thinks the key to beating Crawford is hurting him enough to change his game plan. If Canelo can't do that, he'll be in trouble.
Right now, Canelo is looking at his options for a May return to the ring. One possible opponent is William Scull, the IBF Super-middleweight champion.
Crawford has made it clear he wants this fight, even with the weight difference. Many boxing experts think the size gap is too much for 'Bud' to overcome. But as Jones Jr. points out, we won't know for sure until they step in the ring.
