Canelo Alvarez might have his next opponent lined up. IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull says he's got an offer to fight the Mexican superstar.
Canelo's been looking for his next challenge since he beat Edgar Berlanga last September. He's still the unified champion at 168 pounds, holding the WBC, WBA, and WBO belts. But he lost the IBF strap when he didn't face his mandatory challenger.
That's where Scull comes in. The Cuban fighter won the vacant IBF title by beating Vladimir Shishkin in Germany. Now, he's eyeing a unification bout with Canelo.
In a recent interview, Scull spilled the beans about the offer:
"The truth is that there are three offers: to Berlanga, to Canelo and at the time there was talk of [Christian] Mbilli but I think that was left behind because the offer was not very good. But we are aiming to unify with Canelo Alvarez. And now on January 10 we will speak over the phone and they will tell us more later."
Scull's excited about the possibility of facing Canelo. He added:
"I will keep you informed on what is coming because this is going to be a great year. That will be a good fight for me [with Canelo] to continue dreaming and continue making history."
But there's a catch. Canelo might not see Scull as a big money fight. He's already turned down similar options in September. Plus, Canelo's said there's one fighter he'd love to face, though he hasn't named names.
The boxing world's been buzzing about a potential showdown between Canelo and Terence Crawford. Crawford, a pound-for-pound star, wants to move up two weight classes to 168 pounds for the fight.
For now, we'll have to wait and see what Canelo decides. Will he go for the big name in Crawford? Or will he try to become undisputed again by facing Scull? Scull says we'll know more after January 10. Stay tuned, fight fans.
