Floyd Mayweather thinks Canelo Alvarez is avoiding David Benavidez. The former boxer, who beat Canelo years ago, shared his thoughts on the potential fight between the two champions.
Canelo Alvarez, the current unified super-middleweight world champion, has only lost to two men in his career. David Benavidez, a 27-year-old former two-time super-middleweight champion, wants to become the third. But the fight hasn't happened yet.
Benavidez got tired of waiting for a shot at Canelo and moved up to light-heavyweight. He's not likely to come back down to super-middleweight now. Fans hope Canelo will move up to 175 pounds to make the fight happen. Canelo has fought at light-heavyweight twice before, so it's possible.
Mayweather told Fight Hub TV what he thinks about the situation:
"If it was up to me, like, we keep on saying we want to see Benavidez. Canelo is a hell of a fighter, but in my personal opinion is that he's ducking Benavidez and that's just my personal opinion and I'm allowed to speak my mind, that's just what it is. We want to see Benavidez – let's make it happen!"
Canelo isn't likely to fight Benavidez soon. He's expected to defend his unified super-middleweight titles in May. Terence Crawford might be his opponent, but Crawford would need to move up two divisions. Many fans want to see that fight. William Scull, who has the other belt in the division after Canelo gave it up, might also get the chance.
Whatever happens, it looks like Benavidez will have to wait a bit longer for his shot at Canelo.
