Canelo Alvarez will step back into the ring next May for his usual 'Cinco de Mayo' fight in 2025. The WBC, WBA, and WBO super-middleweight champion is looking for his next opponent after his last win.
Alvarez beat Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision in September 2024. The Mexican star kept all his super-middleweight titles in that fight.
Now, there's talk about who Canelo might face next. Some people are linking Terence Crawford to a potential fight. But Crawford fights several weight classes below Canelo, which could make it tough.
David Benavidez, known as "The Mexican Monster," was once seen as a likely opponent for Canelo. But Benavidez has moved up to 175lbs and doesn't plan to come back down to super-middleweight.
When asked about who he'd like to fight, Canelo mentioned an old rival - Floyd Mayweather. In an interview with DAZN, Canelo said:
"Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it's not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn."
Canelo's desire for a rematch with Mayweather comes from their first fight back in September 2013 in Las Vegas. Mayweather won that fight easily on points, handing Canelo his first career loss.
But a rematch is unlikely to happen. Mayweather retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record. He's recently talked about his fight with Canelo, comparing it to his bout with Manny Pacquiao.
For now, Canelo's next opponent remains up in the air. But fans can look forward to seeing the champ back in action come May 2025.
