David Benavidez thinks Terence Crawford might have a shot against Canelo Alvarez, but he wouldn't be shocked if Canelo wins without breaking a sweat.
Fans are getting excited about a potential mega-fight between Crawford and Canelo in 2025. The buzz has grown recently as both fighters are looking for opponents next spring. This comes after it seemed like the chances of seeing this big matchup were fading.
Crawford last stepped into the ring in August, beating Israil Madrimov to grab the WBA super-welterweight title. Canelo, on the other hand, defended his unified super-middleweight belts against Edgar Berlanga in September.
Benavidez, who currently holds the WBC interim light-heavyweight title, has been trying to get a fight with Canelo for years without luck. He shared his thoughts on the potential Crawford-Canelo matchup in a recent interview.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Crawford gives him a great fight, and I wouldn't be surprised if Canelo beats him easy," Benavidez said in an interview. "Crawford is a great fighter but his last fight was at 154 and it was a super tough fight. So imagine he's going up two more weight classes to 168. There are weight classes for a reason."
Benavidez acknowledged Crawford's skills but pointed out the weight difference as a big factor. He added:
"Crawford is a great fighter so he could definitely make it a great fight, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's not a hard fight for Canelo."
If the Canelo fight doesn't happen, Crawford might face Vergil Ortiz next. The only boxer who has fought both Crawford and Ortiz has offered a prediction on that potential matchup, though the details weren't provided.
