Terence Crawford doesn't think much of Gervonta Davis' chances against him. The WBA super-welterweight champion sums up the potential matchup in just two words: "There's levels."
Crawford, a four-weight world champion, has been on a tear lately. He became undisputed champion at super-lightweight and welterweight before moving up to 154lbs. His stoppage win over Errol Spence Jr. at 147lbs turned heads, and he followed it up with a victory against Israil Madrimov in August.
Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, has his own impressive resume. He's won titles in multiple weight classes and has knocked out 28 of his 30 opponents. His recent run includes big wins over Ryan Garcia, Leo Santa Cruz, and Rolly Romero. In June, he defended his title with a knockout victory over Frank Martin.
Fans have been talking about a fantasy matchup between Crawford and Davis for years. Davis even said he'd be willing to move up in weight to face Crawford. But Crawford doesn't seem worried.
In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club, Crawford dismissed Davis' chances:
"He's just talking. He's got the confidence in himself that he believes he could do that because he's been knocking all these fighters out. No knock to Tank but if he thinks he's going to knock me out he's got another thing coming."
The fight is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Crawford now fights at 154lbs, which is a big jump from Davis' lightweight division. There's also talk of Crawford facing another unnamed world champion in 2025.
For now, it looks like this matchup will stay in the realm of fantasy. But in boxing, you never know what might happen.
