Canelo's Candid Take on Jake Paul's Skills: "He's Not a Real Boxer"

Ronald Crawley Nov. 15, 2024, 9:10 a.m.

Paul, now 27, brings a 10-1 record to the fight. Tyson, at 58, returns to professional boxing after nearly 20 years away. The match has split opinion among fans and pundits alike.

But Paul's already looking past Tyson. He's set his sights on Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Paul told the Timbo Sugar Show:

"This moment will prove I'm the face of boxing, the largest attraction. Me vs. Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight, arguably even bigger than me vs. Tyson. Canelo is on his way out. He's going to want a payday. I want to show the world all the [stuff] I've been talking about beating Canelo is actually true. I'll have the biggest upset in the history of boxing."

Canelo wasn't impressed. He said:

"I think Netflix is good for boxing but I think with that fight, Netflix is doing something wrong there. I think it's more a show than a fight."

He pointed out the near 30-year age gap between Paul and Tyson as a concern.

As for fighting Paul himself? Canelo dismissed the idea. He said:

"My level is another level. He needs to enjoy what he's doing and that's it. He needs to calm down and stop calling out people on other levels. I think he needs to focus on what he's doing, he's doing good things."

Canelo suggested Paul stick to fighting MMA stars instead.

The Paul vs. Tyson fight takes place Friday night on Netflix. It's sure to be an event, whether you see it as a legitimate boxing match or pure entertainment.
