Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson might fight each other soon. Both boxers are undefeated lightweight champions with very different fighting styles.
Davis, nicknamed 'Tank', holds the WBA lightweight title. He's known for his knockout power, having stopped 28 out of 30 opponents. Stevenson, on the other hand, is the WBC lightweight champion and is famous for his defensive skills, though he has fewer knockouts on his record.
In a recent interview with Cigar Talk, Davis didn't seem worried about fighting Stevenson. He said:
"Hell no! How is he the best? Show me something that he's done that's outrageous. Show me."
Davis criticized Stevenson's style, saying:
"His power isn't outrageous and what defence? He just jumps back, you never see him slip any punches, you never see that. Go watch him, you just see him back up and move around, move around, he ain't got no technique."
Davis also mentioned a sparring session they had:
"I touched him with 16 ounce gloves on and he ran, imagine if I hit him with 8 ounce gloves."
Stevenson's last fight for the vacant WBC belt against Edwin De Los Santos wasn't his best performance. He won, but many fans weren't impressed. Davis used this as a condition for their potential fight:
"Tell him to rematch Edwin De La Santos and if he beats him we can get it on. I guarantee you he won't fight that guy again. I guarantee it."
De Los Santos has a record of 16 wins (14 by knockout) and 2 losses. Stevenson later said he fought with a shoulder injury, which might explain his performance.
Davis recently defended his belt with a knockout win over Frank Martin. Stevenson kept his title with a points victory against Artem Harutyunyan after a planned fight with Joe Cordina was cancelled due to a hand injury.
Looking ahead, Davis is set to fight Lamont Roach Jr in January. Stevenson might face William Zepeda in February, but that depends on how his recovery goes.
