Roy Jones Jr. has picked his win over James Toney as the best of his career. The boxing legend shared this during a chat on The Overdogs Podcast.
Jones, a four-weight world champion, had a career that puts him among the sport's greatest. He won world titles at middleweight, super-middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. His move from middleweight to heavyweight champion was the first in over a century.
Jones's list of achievements is long. He grabbed an Olympic medal as an amateur. He became the undisputed champion at light heavyweight. His wins over big names like Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, and John Ruiz cemented his place in boxing history.
But it's his victory over James Toney that Jones rates as his best. He explained why in an interview with The Overdogs Podcast:
"When I fought James Toney. I'm not hating on nobody but when you fight a guy and they're at the pinnacle of his career, now you're doing something. You can beat him when he's at his best, now you're getting somewhere. I fought James Toney when he was at his best, 44-0. He was pound for pound the best fighter in the boxing at the time. I went up to him. I did that when he was 44-0."
At the time, Toney was undefeated with 44 wins. Many saw him as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing. Jones moved up in weight to face him, a bold move that paid off.
The fight wasn't close. Jones dominated, winning by unanimous decision. The judges scored it 119-108, 118-109, and 117-110, all in Jones's favor.
Jones has been busy lately. He's looked back on his own career, talked about today's boxing stars, and even picked a winner for a possible fight between Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson.
But it's clear that his win over Toney still stands out in his mind. It's a testament to Jones's skill that he can point to such a dominant win over an undefeated champion as his career best.
