Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and David Benavidez might end up in the ring together, and boxing fans can't wait. But Canelo doesn't seem too excited about it.
Alvarez stands tall as the unified champion at 168lbs. He's won world titles in four different weight classes. Benavidez, on the other hand, has never lost a fight and has held the super-middleweight title twice.
Many think Benavidez could give Canelo his toughest fight at super-middleweight. But Erik Morales, the first Mexican to win world titles in four weight classes, doesn't agree. He told YouTube:
"With all due respect to Benavidez, he has no technique, his technique is very limited, he is very aggressive, he goes with his hands down, he throws himself in order to get there. Canelo is no comparison with the other rivals that he has already beaten. Because he has experience and he knows where to hit. Canelo has enough experience to handle the fight. If Canelo we saw in the fight [against Jaime Munguia] appears against Benavidez, I think it will not be easy for Benavidez."
Morales thinks Canelo's experience will make the difference. He points out that Benavidez's aggressive style might not work against someone as skilled as Canelo.
While fans dream about this match-up, both fighters are busy with other plans. Benavidez has moved up to light-heavyweight. He's now the mandatory challenger for the WBC title after beating Oleksandr Gvozdyk. He'll defend that status against David Morrell soon, but we don't know when yet.
Canelo will get back in the ring in May 2025. He'll start looking for his next opponent soon. Will it be Benavidez? We'll have to wait and see.
