Tyson Fury's co-promoter Bob Arum thinks his fighter should've won the May 2023 heavyweight title fight against Oleksandr Usyk. The match ended with Usyk taking a split decision victory, handing Fury his first professional loss.
Fury started strong, controlling the early rounds. But things changed in the ninth when Usyk landed a big shot, leading to a 10 count for Fury. Despite rallying late, it wasn't enough for Fury to win on the scorecards.
Arum shared his view of the fight in a recent interview with BoxNation.
"I thought he won the fight. I gave him the second through to seventh round, and the last round, but again, one judge saw it that way and the other two didn't."
Fury admitted he made mistakes and had too much fun in the ring. Now, he's gearing up for a rematch in December 2023, aiming to erase the only loss on his record.
Arum offered some advice for the upcoming fight:
"I think he's gotta box Usyk to way he did and not relax and clown around and let Usyk back in the fight like he did in May. I think it's a very winnable fight for Fury but he's got to be intelligent in the fight."
Fury's no stranger to rematches. He used his footwork and boxing smarts to outpoint Deontay Wilder in their first fight. In their next two bouts, he switched tactics and knocked Wilder out both times.
The winner of the Fury-Usyk rematch could face IBF champion Daniel Dubois next in an undisputed heavyweight title fight. It's a big opportunity for both fighters to cement their legacy in the heavyweight division.
