Oscar De La Hoya has picked Terence Crawford as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. The former champion and current promoter made his choice clear in a recent interview, praising Crawford's fan-friendly style and impressive boxing skills.
De La Hoya shared his thoughts with Fighthype, explaining why he believes Crawford stands out in the ongoing debate about the top fighter across all weight classes.
"Crawford I love because he's probably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, his style is fan friendly, he's a tremendous boxer and undefeated."
Crawford, known as "Bud," has kept his undefeated record intact. He recently added another title to his collection, becoming the WBA super-welterweight champion. Crawford won a points victory over Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles last August.
Some boxing fans felt Crawford didn't look his best in that fight. But De La Hoya defended the performance, pointing out the challenges Crawford faced.
"He went up a weight class and met a guy that was really tough. Sometimes you're not going to look as good as you did in your previous fights against smaller guys. It's ok."
De La Hoya thinks Crawford still needs to establish himself at 154 pounds. He believes Crawford fought a tough opponent, but maybe not the most dangerous one in the division.
Looking ahead, De La Hoya sees a big fight on the horizon. He's excited about a potential matchup between Crawford and Vergil Ortiz, a fighter his company promotes.
"I think Crawford and Vergil Ortiz next year first quarter will be a super fight."
This comes after Mikey Garcia Jr. recently talked about Ortiz's chances against Crawford. It's clear that Crawford continues to be a hot topic in boxing circles, with his skills and potential matchups generating plenty of buzz.
