Teofimo Lopez wants to fight Gervonta Davis. The super-lightweight champion called out Davis for a potential bout later this year.
Davis, known as "Tank," has become one of boxing's biggest stars. He's got a perfect record of 30 wins with no losses, and 28 of those wins came by knockout. Fighters who face him risk a brutal defeat but are guaranteed a big payday.
In his last fight, Davis defended his WBA Lightweight World Title. He stopped the previously-undefeated Frank Martin in the eighth round. After that win, Davis tried to set up a fight with Vasiliy Lomachenko, but the talks fell through.
Now, Davis is looking for a new opponent. He was aiming for a rematch with Isaac Cruz, but Cruz lost his super-lightweight world title to Jose Valenzuela. Some people in boxing say Valenzuela might be Davis' next opponent, but Valenzuela's trainer, Robert Garcia, says he won't fight again this year.
That's where Lopez comes in. He's had a good year so far, winning two fights by unanimous decision. He's been talking about moving up to welterweight or even super-welterweight, and he recently called out Terence Crawford.
But now, Lopez has his sights set on Davis. He said on social media:
"Hey Tank! Give me a fight brotha! He ain't fighting, I ain't fighting…what's up? I don't like people saying I'm ducking somebody. Why do I beat him? Cause I'm the takeover, that's why."
If this fight happens, it would be Davis' second bout at super-lightweight. He's fought there before, beating Mario Barrios. It would also be a match-up between two of the top fighters of the current era.
But fans shouldn't get too excited just yet. Davis is planning to fight in November or December, and it's unlikely that a bout with Lopez could be set up that quickly.
Other top fighters like Shakur Stevenson, Ryan Garcia, and Devin Haney are also in the mix for big fights. But for now, all eyes are on whether Davis will respond to Lopez's challenge.
