Davis, known as "Tank," has made a name for himself with his destructive power. He's knocked out 28 opponents in his 30 professional fights. Stevenson, on the other hand, is all about elite movement and defense. At 27, he's racked up an impressive record of unanimous victories.
Stevenson recently signed with Matchroom, led by promoter Eddie Hearn. He's set to fight Joe Cordina on October 12 in Saudi Arabia. After that, he's got his sights set on William Zepeda, the number one contender, before potentially pursuing a fight with Davis.
But Davis' camp isn't holding its breath. Kenny Ellis, Davis' co-trainer, shared his thoughts in an interview with Mill City Boxing:
"Not if he's signed with Matchroom, cause they not gonna do that to Shakur. They wouldn't do that … This is my opinion, I'm not saying the fight ain't gonna happen after 2025 but I wouldn't do it. He's a three-time champion. He don't need no more experience, no more build-up, his names big enough. Everybody want it now. Anything else is just bulls**t. So if you can't do it now or in 2025, why do it in 26?"
When asked about previous talks between the two camps, Ellis didn't mince words:
"Man, I don't even want to go back and forth with that. They grown men. Shakur could've fought. He got protective custody. He ain't have to do that. That's the end of that."
While Stevenson's next move is clear, Davis' plans are up in the air. There's talk of a potential fight in November in Las Vegas, possibly against WBA Super-Lightweight Champion Jose Valenzuela, but nothing's been announced yet.
The boxing world is eager to see these two face off. Their contrasting styles promise an interesting match-up. But with Stevenson's new deal with Matchroom and Riyadh Season, the path to the ring might be more complicated than fans would like.
For now, it looks like we'll have to wait and see if these two champions will ever square off. The boxing world moves in mysterious ways, and only time will tell if this dream match-up will become a reality.
