Floyd Mayweather's name often comes up when people talk about the best boxers ever. But Julio Cesar Chavez, a former champion from Mexico, thinks he could have beaten Mayweather if they had fought in their best years.
Mayweather, known as "Pretty Boy Floyd" or "Money Mayweather," ended his career with a perfect 50-0 record. He's famous for his amazing defense in the ring and for making a lot of money in his later fights. He beat big names like Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton, and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
On the other hand, Chavez was a world champion in three different weight classes. From 1990 to 1993, The Ring magazine said he was the best boxer in the world, pound for pound. In his long career, Chavez fought 115 times, winning 107, losing 6, and drawing 2.
In a recent interview with PremierLiveTV, Chavez said he thinks he would have won against Mayweather at certain weights:
"I believe that at 140 lbs, 135lbs I would have beaten him definitely. I would have beaten him why? Because that was my weight. I could never dial 147lbs. I fought for the championship but no it was not my weight, you understand me. At 135 or 140 I would have beaten Mayweather. Remember that I fought with his uncle and his uncle was the one who taught him so I think I would have beaten him."
Chavez feels he would have had the edge because 135 and 140 pounds were his best weights. He also mentioned that he fought Mayweather's uncle, who taught Floyd how to box. But Chavez admits he had trouble when he moved up to 147 pounds.
While we can only imagine this matchup, Mayweather keeps boxing in exhibition matches. Just last weekend, he dominated John Gotti III in Mexico City. It looks like "Money" Mayweather will keep entertaining fans for a while longer.
