Márquez shared his thoughts in a recent interview. He pointed out that Canelo currently fights two divisions heavier than Crawford. While Crawford last fought at 154lbs, Canelo competes at 168lbs.
"That's 168 on the scale, what happens the next day when Canelo makes more weight, maybe 20lbs, Canelo will be fighting at 185, and Crawford maybe 168, 170, this is the difference, who has the power? Canelo."
The Mexican legend thinks this weight gap will give Canelo a significant power advantage. He compared it to Canelo's fight with Amir Khan, where Khan had early success but got knocked out in the sixth round.
Márquez advised Crawford to stick to fighting at 154lbs or below. He believes taking on Canelo would harm Crawford's legacy. "I don't think Crawford can beat him, he's a good fighter but it's not his weight," Márquez said.
Despite these concerns, there was hope for the fight when Turki Alalshikh offered financial backing. But a public disagreement between Alalshikh and Canelo has reduced the chances of it happening.
Crawford, now 36, might have to look elsewhere for his next challenge. There's talk of a potential fight with Vergil Ortiz. But Alalshikh thinks Crawford will only step into the ring again if Canelo is the opponent.
