"Regular" WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis stated that he is still very close with the former world champion in five weight categories Floyd Mayweather Jr.. For most of his career, Davis worked with Mayweather's Mayweather Promotions. The parties parted ways last year when Davis' contract expired and he decided to start his own promotion company, GTD Promotions.

During the fight last Saturday with Ryan Garcia Davis had Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe as an advisor. On the day of the fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Mayweather was next to Davis for most of the evening and shouted words of encouragement to him throughout the fight. Davis won in a spectacular victory, sending Garcia to the floor in the second round and then hitting him to the torso in the seventh round. After the fight, Davis stated that he still turns to Mayweather for advice on major career events.

“He gave me great advice, he told me to stay calm. I always like to listen to Floyd when it comes to big fights like this one because he's the only one who's been in my shoes and been involved in events like this," Davis said.

“So I always try to stay close to Floyd when these things happen, just to remember and do the right thing. I appreciate Floyd for always being in my corner, covering my back," Gervonta added.
