A few months ago IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk returned home to Ukraine to join the local military in their resistance to the ongoing Russian invasion. Some time later, Usyk decided to switch from military duty to training camp for the upcoming revenge with Anthony Joshua.

Last September, Usyk outboxed Joshua and won the heavyweight crown at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Details of the rematch were officially announced earlier this week, which will take place on August 20 in Saudi Arabia. The undefeated boxer has rejected any suggestion that the ongoing war with Russia will give him additional motivation in the upcoming fight.

“My friends and people close to me are dying in this war. When so many people are suffering, I have no idea how it can have a positive effect on anything. I was there for one month and saw with my own eyes what was happening there... rockets and fighter jets were flying. It's terrible," Usyk said.

Joshua, who activated the rematch clause to secure a second clash with Usyk, paid tribute to the Ukrainians. The Briton also maintains friendly relations with Vladimir Klitschko, who is currently helping his brother Vitali and his compatriots in resisting the Russian occupation.

“We must pay tribute to Usyk, the Klitschko brothers, to everyone in Ukraine. I know it's hard for them, but hard times don't last long. Do not give up. The world is looking at you, the world is supporting you. We always support others in difficult times, especially the Ukrainian people now,” Joshua said.
