In the end of April Shakur Stevenson (18-0, 9 KOs) beat Oscar Valdez (30-1, 23 KOs) and unified the WBC and WBO featherweight belts. The American's next fight is likely to take place in August or September. Stevenson's rival could be another Mexican.
According to ESPN Mexico, negotiations are underway for Shakur, the Olympic champion from Rio, who quickly conquered professional boxing and may become the leader of American boxing in the future, with the WBO world champion. Emanuel Navarrete (35-1, 29 KOs), who intends to change the weight category. The Mexican has not lost in the pro ring for almost ten years.
Recall that Joe Cordina (15-0, 9 KOs) this week also acquired the status of a candidate for the fight against Shakur. Last Saturday in Cardiff, Cordina effectively knocked out Kenichi Ogawa and took away the IBF world title from him.
“Shakur Stevenson is ready to come to the UK and fight me in a unification fight. Shakur is a future boxing legend, but if anyone can beat him at super featherweight today, that someone is me. I have the right technique and a lot of self-confidence,” said the Welshman.
