Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn recently said he would play 'aggressive' to try and sign a lightweight Gervont Davis. For now, Hearn's actions depend on whether Davis is contractually allowed to take on such an offer. Davis fought under the banner of Mayweather Promotions for a long time and was handled by Al Haymon of Premier Boxing Champions, but recently there have been signs that his promotional relationship with Mayweather may be coming to an end.
While Davis has become one of boxing's few stars in recent years under Mayweather, the Baltimore native recently began posting cryptic social media posts expressing frustration with his powerful mentor. In one instance, Davis posted a tweet - now deleted - in which he suggested that his upcoming Showtime fight with Rolando Romero on May 28 in Brooklyn would be the last fight on his contract with Mayweather.
Davis would not publicly comment on this claim later, but Mayweather himself recently acknowledged that such a scenario was possible when he told FightHype.com, "Nothing lasts forever. I will always love Tank. I like him. I love him and look at him like a son. He must do what is best for him. I feel like I've done a great job so far building him up and getting him into good fights, great fights."
The news of Davis' split and potential free agent status has Hearn, who is funded by streaming platform DAZN, rubbing his hands in anticipation.
“I saw Gervonta Davis writing about being approached by other promotional companies,” Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show. — I do not know anything about his contractual position, so I will not contact him directly. But I can just walk up to him and tell him that as soon as his contract expires, we'll be ready to make him a fantastic offer. I know Gervonta. He is a great young fighter. He is one of the biggest stars in the game. It's time for him to get what he needs. It's time for him to get what he wants if he is dissatisfied with something."
Hearn hasn't speculated too much on Davis' contract status, but believes that if Davis is interested in moving to the Matchroom/DAZN family, he'll have some serious fights ahead of him. Hearn mentioned Ryan Garcia, who is promoted by Golden Boy and who is collaborating with DAZN, as an intriguing possibility for such a collaboration. He also named Devin Haney, the WBC lightweight champion that Hearn had been promoting for a long time. At the same time, Haney no longer has a contract with Hearn. The American signed a cooperation agreement with Top Rank and can play for Bob Arum's company up to two fights, including fighting for the title of absolute world champion in lightweight against George Kambosos. Their first meeting is scheduled for June 5th at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
"Again, we don't want to interfere with Davis' contract status," Hearn added. - A great fight with Ryan Garcia is planned for DAZN, which will be organized along with Golden Boy. After these two fights, there will be a great fight with Devin Haney. We certainly would like to pursue Gervonta Davis extremely aggressively if he were in a position where he no longer had a contract."
