Former world champion in three weight classes Vasily Lomachenko is determined to return to the top of the lightweight division. Former unified champion to face former world champion Richard Commey in the main event of the evening at Madison Square Garden this coming Saturday, December 11th.
Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs) last fought in June, knocking out Masayoshi Nakatani in the ninth round. George Kambosos Jr. recently claimed his title as best in the division by beating Teofimo Lopez by split decision last month, who ousted Lomachenko by unanimous decision in October 2020.
Kambosos's victory has changed the lightweight landscape, and Lomachenko is due to make his announcement in that weight class on Saturday.
“Richard Commey has great strength, reach and experience. This is an interesting challenge for me, and I know that the fans are looking forward to this fight," said Lomachenko. "I am 100 percent healthy and ready for Saturday's fight. Madison Square Garden is like a second home to me. So many great moments in my career have happened in Madison Square Garden! In this arena, I won the lightweight title against Jorge Linarez, so returning there brings back a lot of great memories."
“I’m not going to say that I am the number one lightweight champion. This is a question for the fans. I always want to show my skills in the ring and I hope that the fans enjoy what I do. We can discuss my future after Saturday's fight. Of course, Kambosos is the fight I want. He is the new champion and he had a great fight against Lopez. But Commey deserves my full attention, and that is the task that I am currently focusing on."
“I am motivated by my goals, one of which is to become an absolute champion. Commey is one of the most dangerous fighters in the division, and he stands in my way,” Lomachenko said.
