WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) serves as a mentor of Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs), one of the best and most popular prospect in the boxing world. Canelo and Garcia train under the same trainer, Eddie Reynoso, but the work ethic of the 23-year-old potential boxing star is inadequate. At least that's what his older counterpart thinks.
"Ryan is very talented, but he's wasting a lot of time, so he's wasting talent. I don't see a hundred percent dedication to boxing, that's a bad sign for him. We always remind him to come to the training room, work hard and at the same time learn. You have to learn every day and fight at least five times a year. When I started my career, I fought fifteen times a year. So Ryan needs to dedicate himself more to the sport," stated Canelo.
"We're here to support Ryan. He'll be back to work soon. I need some time. He knows what happened and he knows we're a team. We will support him every step of the way," added the 31-year-old Mexican, considered by many to be the P4P ranking leader.
Ryan Garcia beat Olympic champion Luke Campbell early this January. However, in April, Ryan announced that he would be taking a break from boxing due to mental health issues. Garcia was scheduled to face Joseph Diaz in Los Angeles on November 27, but it looks like that fight will be postponed until next year due to Kingery's hand injury. Ryan has already stated after surgery that he will come back stronger than ever.
