Jeanette Zacarias Zapata (2-4, 0 KOs), who suffered a severe head injury in Saturday's bout against Marie Pierre Uhl (4-0-1, 2 KOs) at an event in Montreal, Canada, and was then put in an induced coma, passed away five days later at Sacre Coeur de Montreal Hospital. This information was confirmed by that evening's promoter Yvon Michel.
In the fourth round of the fight, the 18-year-old Mexican missed a hard punch and received a standing knockdown from the referee, but seconds later she started cramping and lost consciousness. The girl was immediately taken to the hospital and doctors put her in a pharmacological coma. Unfortunately, the treatment proved ineffective, and Zapata died five days after the ill-fated bout.
Jeanette Zacarias Zapata had six fights in the professional ring. The Mexican had a knockout in the fight immediately preceding her performance in Montreal, but as her managers assured her, she flew to Canada with a full medical check-up package.
