Umar Kremlev becomes the new President of AIBA

Today, on December 12, an online meeting of the International Boxing Association Congress was held, according to the results of which Umar Kremlev was elected President of AIBA for the next four years. The candidacy of Umar Kremlev was supported by the overwhelming majority of countries among 155 voters.

In the final round, Kremlev got 86 votes out of 77 needed to win. Second place went to Boris Van der Worst (45 votes), while the current AIBA Executive President, Muhammad Mustahsan, received 19 votes.

7 officially registered candidates took part in the current elections, namely: Rami Al-Masri (Germany), Anas Al-Otaiba (UAE), Boris Van der Vorst (Netherlands), Umar Kremlev (Russia), Suleiman Mikailov (Azerbaijan), Muhammad Mustahsan (Morocco), Domingo Solano (Dominican Republic). Two candidates from Germany and the Dominican Republic ultimately withdrew their candidacies.

Since February 2017, Kremlev has also held the post of Secretary General, a member of the executive committee of the Russian Boxing Federation.

In the summer of 2019, the International Olympic Committee deprived AIBA of the status of a sports federation and removed from participation in the Olympics due to a series of corruption scandals. Kremlev said that the first thing in his new post will be working on how to pay off AIBA's debts, which reach $50 million, and restore its membership in the IOC.
