In 2016, the then UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez could fight Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Russian fighter had already signed a contract for the fight, but Eddie refused to do so and ended up fighting against Conor McGregor. Eddie recently hosted a fan conference on his Twitter account. One of his fans asked the fighter why he refused to fight Nurmagomedov and fought McGregor. Here's what Eddie said.
“This fight was different by $2.5 million. That's why,” Alvarez said.
McGregor won that fight by knockout, won the title of champion of the promotion in lightweight and became the first fighter in the history of the organization to own two championship belts at once.
