A year ago, Gennady Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) signed a contract with the DAZN platform, which in the coming years will receive the exclusive rights to broadcast his battles in the territories where it is available. The contract was worth $100 million, with GGG earning at least $16 million for each performance.
The new contract of a boxer from Kazakhstan led to the fact that the boxer wanted, among other things, to review the purse of his long-time coach Abel Sanchez. The American coach did not accept the new conditions of calculating his work and quit working with the current IBF middleweight champion.
The next opponent of Golovkin in the ring should be Kamil Szeremeta (21-0, 5 KOs). Steve Mannix, journalist of Sports Illustrated and DAZN, is not enthusiastic about the rating of this fight and suggests that the boxer from Kazakhstan should earn less on such a duel.
“DAZN did not sign a contract with Golovkin so that he would fight Rolls, Derevyanchenko and Szeremeta. He had to meet Saul Alvarez, Demetrius Andrade and other world champions. If Golovkin wants to fight Szeremeta, he will probably have to agree to a significant reduction of purse,” Mannix said.
The American journalist, however, misses the point that the Pole is the official challenger for the IBF title, which belongs to GGG. If Golovkin refuses to fight Szeremeta, he may lose the championship belt. Yet it should not be ruled out that the coronavirus pandemic will postpone many of the mandatory defenses of world titles.
