WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bad” Crawford (35-0, 26 KOs) won by a technical knockout in the sixth round over the former super lightweight champion Amir Khan (33-5, 20 KOs) in the presence of 14,091 spectators at Madison Arena Square Garden in New York.
The evening promised to be short already in the first round, when Crawford threw Khan onto the floor of the ring with a short right hook. But Khan survived until the end of the round, and both had moments in chess exchange for two or three more rounds. Crawford was more active in the fourth, although Khan also had a clear hit at the bell, and began to be included more in the fifth.
The end came in the sixth, when Crawford punched below the belt. Khan got the time to recover, and at the insistence of his coach Virgil Hunter he decided that he could not continue. Thus, Crawford was credited with a technical knockout victory. The time was 0:47.
“The next fight I want is Errol Spence,” Crawford said after the fight. “When he is ready, he can let us know and we will get this fight.”
Promoter Bob Arum, in turn, added: “We want to fight Errol Spence. Everyone wants this fight. One guy doesn't let us do that, and this is Al Haymon.”
