Retired ex-world contender Michael Watson has spent two days in hospital after being the victim of an apparent car-jacking incident late last week. The 51 year-old, who suffered brain damage in his 1991 clash with Chris Eubank and has since campaigned for charity, was dragged down the road after an assailant crashed into his car, attacked his carer Len Ballack and attempted to drive off.
According to reports, Watson had skin scraped from his back but was discharged from the care of doctors, along with Ballack on Saturday. Ballack had a ‘noxious substance’ sprayed into his eyes after their car was rear-ended before Watson pulled out of the car by one of the suspects. Police are now hunting for the criminals in question after they dumped the car and made off.
Watson has made headlines since that fateful night at White Hart Lane when the Londoner collapsed following the Eubank clash and had to undergo six brain operations as family members feared the worse. Since then, Watson has learned to walk and talk again, although not at one hundred percent capacity, and once completed the London Marathon in six days.
Through 30 fights as a pro, Watson was touted as a nailed on world champion and was ahead on all three scorecards at the time he suffered difficulties against Eubank in their second fight. The previous bout three months earlier has ended in a controversial majority decision in favour of Eubank.
