Daniel Dubois (20-2, 19 KOs) and Riad Merhi (32-2, 26 KOs) are appointed contenders for the fight for the vacant European heavyweight title. The boxing teams were given until February 13 to reach an agreement on this issue.

Dubois last fought in December, defeating Jarrell Miller by stoppage. Thus, the Briton returned to the ring after losing to Alexander Usik.

Merhi, in his last professional appearance, beat Tony Yoki. The EBU heavyweight belt previously belonged to Agit Kabayel, but is not particularly significant even in Europe. The EBU's decision in this situation is purely advisory and is likely to be ignored by both parties if more interesting options present themselves.
