Popular American boxer Ryan Garcia said that Floyd Mayweather advised him to refuse negotiations with the WBC world champion in the first welterweight Devin Haney and switch to WBA title holder Rolando Romero.
“I won’t lie, Floyd is quite influential. He said, “Why would you fight Haney right away? Why not fight Romero and then fight Haney?”
I replied, “That makes sense, but I already told my team that I would fight Devin.” He said, “Some things change.” I'm paraphrasing his words now, but I quickly decided and said, 'Okay, Floyd, that makes sense,'" Garcia said.
Let us remember that Romero eventually agreed on a fight with Isaac Cruz, and Garcia said that he had resumed negotiations with Haney.
