Oleksandr Gvozdyk vs. Edgar Berlanga in Zuffa Boxing? Former Champ Pushes for Madison Square Garden Showdown

A big-name crossover within Dana White’s new boxing banner could be on the table, as Oleksandr Gvozdyk has publicly expressed interest in a fight with Edgar Berlanga. The matchup would likely land in New York, with Madison Square Garden emerging as Gvozdyk’s preferred destination for a bout that could draw heavily from both fighters’ fan bases.

Berlanga recently signed with Zuffa Boxing, the same promotional umbrella under which the Ukrainian veteran is now competing. That shared business structure removes one of boxing’s usual roadblocks, and it immediately makes the fight more realistic than a lot of fantasy matchups fans throw around online.

“I would like that to happen. I don’t see any reason why not,” Gvozdyk said in an interview with Luckypunch.net.

He also laid out the clearest business case for the event, pointing to New York as the natural site.

“I think, for example, doing it at Madison Square Garden makes sense, because in New York the Puerto Rican and Ukrainian diasporas are the biggest. Philadelphia is also nearby, and people would come from there too. So I think this fight makes sense. But whether they accept it, we’ll see.”

From a competitive standpoint, this is an intriguing crossroads fight. Berlanga still carries name value in the American market because of his power and aggressive style, but he also needs a win over a respected former champion to reestablish himself as more than a draw. Gvozdyk, meanwhile, is chasing relevance in the late stage of his career and would have a chance to disrupt Zuffa’s plans by beating a younger, more marketable opponent.

The venue angle matters too. Madison Square Garden has long been one of boxing’s proving grounds, and a Puerto Rican-backed fighter on that stage would almost certainly get a loud response. Add in New York’s sizable Ukrainian community, and the crowd dynamic could give the event a big-fight feel even before a title is involved.

If this matchup gains traction, the next step will be whether Berlanga’s side embraces the risk—and whether Zuffa Boxing sees enough upside to make New York the launch point for one of its most compelling in-house fights yet.
