Rico Verhoeven vs. Oleksandr Usyk Set for WBC Heavyweight Clash: Kickboxing Star Says He Brings a Different Puzzle

A crossover heavyweight showdown is scheduled for May 23 in Giza, Egypt, where Rico Verhoeven is set to face Oleksandr Usyk in a boxing match for the WBC heavyweight title. The matchup puts one of kickboxing’s most accomplished big men across from one of boxing’s elite champions, with global attention already building around the event.

For American fight fans, the intrigue is obvious: this is more than a novelty bout. It is a high-profile test of whether Verhoeven’s size, pressure and striking instincts can create real problems for a polished boxer who has built a career on solving every style placed in front of him.

Speaking to The Ring, Verhoeven leaned into the idea that greatness demands an extreme mindset and made it clear he believes he can surprise the unified champion.

“To become the best at what you do, you have to be a little crazy. That’s not just about me. You have to be a little crazy and obsessed with your craft — and that’s exactly what I am.

I do everything perfectly. I love it, and I enjoy it. I put so much passion into it and I’m happy to be here... We’re bringing attention to combat sports. We’re bringing together two worlds — kickboxing and boxing — to make this sport even bigger.

Usyk has solved a lot of puzzles in boxing. But he hasn’t solved one like me yet. I’m going to bring kickboxing elements into the fight and give him a different problem. I’m a big fighter, around 125 kilograms. He’ll have to deal with that.”

The stakes are real for both men. If Usyk handles the assignment cleanly, he strengthens his standing as the division’s most adaptable heavyweight and keeps the door open for the biggest money fights still out there. If Verhoeven makes this competitive — or shocks the sport entirely — he instantly becomes one of the most fascinating crossover names in combat sports.

There is also the setting. Giza gives the card a spectacle feel that fits a global event, and the atmosphere should lean heavily toward pageantry as much as pure boxing tension. The biggest question now is whether Verhoeven’s size and unorthodox looks can disrupt Usyk’s rhythm once the bell rings.
