Agit Kabayel says he and his team are taking a wait-and-see approach as the heavyweight title picture develops.
Speaking with The Ring, the unbeaten German contender said he recently held talks with promoter Frank Warren and manager Spencer Brown, and the plan for now is to wait for the outcome of the expected Oleksandr Usyk vs. Verhoeven fight. Kabayel currently holds the WBC interim heavyweight belt, which keeps him in a strong position if the division begins to shift later this year.
"We discussed everything with Frank Warren and Spencer Brown. At the moment, we decided to wait for the outcome of the Usyk-Verhoeven fight. I'm just watching to see how the situation resolves itself. Usyk will either fight me or vacate the title. For me, the best option is to wait, and then we'll see what happens," Kabayel said.
There is already a loose target in place for his return. Kabayel is aiming to be back in the ring in September or October as part of a major boxing event in Germany.
The 32-year-old has quietly become one of the more interesting names in the heavyweight mix, and a fall return could position him for an even bigger opportunity if a full WBC title fight opens up. For now, though, his team appears content to let the championship picture sort itself out before making the next move.
Kabayel last fought in January, when he stopped Poland's Damian Knyba by technical knockout in the third round.
