Anthony Joshua, the former world heavyweight champion, is reportedly hanging up his gloves. Joshua's uncle, Adedamola Joshua, revealed this news in an interview with Nigerian media outlet 'The Punch', claiming that the decision brings relief to their family.
The announcement came after a distressing event at the end of December 2023. A serious car accident claimed the lives of two of Anthony's friends. This incident seemed to play a significant role in his decision to retire from boxing. Adedamola expressed that the emotional toll from seeing Anthony fightāand at times get knocked downābecame too much for them.
"The most important thing is that he has retired from boxing. That makes us very happy because every time he fights in the ring, we get very excited," Adedamola told 'The Punch'.
Anthony's uncle also mentioned how each match felt like a rollercoaster of emotions for the family. For them, knowing he decided to bow out while still celebrated by fans comes as a respite.
"Every time he gets knocked down, it's like our hearts are coming out of our chests. All those emotions every time he fights are too traumatic for us too. Now that he's said he's going while the ovation is at its highest, we're happy."
