Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis might not fight in Atlanta on November 14. The Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission (GAEC) hasn't given the green light for the event yet.
The main problem is the weight difference between the two boxers. Paul last fought at over 199 pounds, while Davis weighed in at 133.8 pounds for his most recent bout. GAEC rules don't allow fights where boxers differ by more than nine pounds. The gap between Paul and Davis is more than 60 pounds.
GAEC will meet on September 18. They might talk about the fight then. Even if it's called an exhibition instead of a pro fight, there's no guarantee it'll get approved.
Local authorities were excited at first, but now they're worried about the boxers' safety. Both Paul and Davis are big names in boxing, and lots of people want to see them fight.
Matt Woodruff, Executive Director of GAEC, told Boxing Scene:
"The commission has not approved this event. The next commission meeting is scheduled for September 18, 2023, at which time this event could potentially be evaluated."
The fight isn't canceled yet, but Atlanta might not host it. If GAEC says no, the organizers might look for a new place in another state that's okay with the fight conditions.
Paul, an influencer who became a boxer, and Davis, the WBA lightweight champ, are among the most well-known figures in boxing right now. Their match-up would draw a huge audience.
For now, everyone's waiting to see what happens at the GAEC meeting on September 18. The fight's future hangs in the balance until then.
