Japanese boxer Shigetoshi Kotari died at 28, six days after a championship title fight. His death has led to mourning in the boxing world and a quick change in fight rules.

Kotari fought Yamato Hata for the OPBF super featherweight title on August 2, 2023. The match ended in a split draw. Kotari's record stood at 8 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws.

After the bout, Kotari lost consciousness. Medics rushed him to the hospital for emergency brain surgery. Doctors found he had a subdural hematoma, a serious brain injury. Despite their efforts, Kotari died on August 8, 2023.

The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) expressed their sorrow in a statement:

Rest in peace, Shigetoshi Kotari. The boxing world mourns the tragic passing of Japanese fighter Shigetoshi Kotari, who succumbed to injuries sustained during his August 2nd title fight. A warrior in the ring. A fighter in spirit. Gone too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, team, and the entire Japanese boxing community.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman also shared his condolences:

Deeply sorry for this loss, a ring accident which makes all of us go back to continue research to find ways to make boxing safer and implement prevention programs. Our deepest sympathy and condolences for his family and the boxing community in Japan.

Kotari's death sparked calls for greater safety in boxing. The Japan Boxing Commission acted quickly. They shortened OPBF title fights from 12 rounds to 10. This change took effect right away to better protect fighters.

Kotari's passing serves as a stark reminder of the risks boxers face in the ring. The boxing community will continue to seek ways to make the sport safer while honoring Kotari's memory.
