Chris Eubank Sr wants his son to fight Canelo Alvarez instead of Conor Benn. The former world champion thinks a bout with the Mexican superstar makes more sense for Chris Eubank Jr than a rematch with Benn.
Eubank Jr and Benn faced off in a brutal 12-round fight back in April. Eubank Jr won by points decision. Now, they've agreed to do it again later this year under the same conditions as their first encounter.
But Eubank Sr isn't happy about it. He didn't want the first fight to happen because of weight concerns. That led to a falling out with his son. They patched things up just hours before the bout and arrived at the stadium together right before the opening bell.
Now, Eubank Sr is against the rematch. He's worried about his son's health after Chris Jr ended up in the hospital due to the tough weight cut for the first fight. The concerned father even asked his son to retire and called on the British Boxing Board of Control to step in.
Instead of the Benn rematch, Eubank Sr thinks his son should target Canelo Alvarez. He shared his thoughts in a recent YouTube video called "The Eubank fight I would back".
"As much as we want to see a Canelo against a Crawford, the weights are wrong and so it cannot happen. The fight you should be looking for is a Chris Eubank Jr against a Canelo. That makes sense, that I would back."
Eubank Sr's suggestion comes as Canelo gets ready for a big fight in September. He'll face Terence Crawford, the former two-weight undisputed champion who's moving up a couple of divisions to challenge the undisputed super-middleweight ruler.
Despite Eubank Sr's wishes, the Eubank Jr vs Benn rematch is set for November at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. If Eubank Jr wins, a fight with Canelo might still be on the cards down the line.
