Julio Cesar Chavez, the Mexican boxing legend, stands by his son's innocence after U.S. immigration authorities detained Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The arrest stems from allegations of a fraudulent permanent residency application and suspected ties to organized crime.
At Mexico City International Airport, a visibly upset Chavez spoke to the media about his son's situation. He revealed that Chavez Jr. is struggling to make sense of the accusations against him.
"Julio is in shock. He doesn't understand, he tells me: 'How do they accuse me of all this, dad?'" Chavez shared.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Chavez Jr. based on multiple serious allegations. These include an arrest warrant from Mexico for alleged involvement in organized crime activities such as arms, ammunition, and explosives trafficking.
U.S. authorities claim Chavez Jr.'s permanent residency application contained "multiple fraudulent statements," according to the Department of Homeland Security. They've also raised concerns about a possible connection to the Sinaloa Cartel, suggesting that Chavez Jr.'s wife, a U.S. citizen, had a previous relationship with a deceased son of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman.
Despite these accusations, the elder Chavez remains confident in his son's innocence.
"I'm calm because my son is innocent, but until everything is proven, it won't be fixed,"Chavez stated, emphasizing his hope for a quick resolution to the case.
The investigation continues, with the case generating strong reactions in both Mexico and the United States. As the son of the "Great Mexican Champion," Chavez Jr.'s legal troubles have caught significant public attention, leaving many to wonder how this will unfold for the former boxer and his legendary father.
