Jaron Ennis is getting ready to fight in a new weight class. The 28-year-old from Philadelphia has decided to move up to super-welterweight for his next bout later this year.
'Boots' Ennis gave up his IBF welterweight title last month. He had been the unified WBA champion and IBF world champion at 147 pounds. Now, he's looking for new challenges at 154.
Ennis confirmed his move to super-welterweight, and there's already talk about his first fight in the division. Eddie Hearn, a well-known boxing promoter, has sent an offer to Josh Kelly for a potential title eliminator in October. Kelly is currently ranked number 3 by the WBO.
Kelly didn't seem too happy with the offer. He told FightHype.com:
"Yeah the offer is s--t, he's done it like 'You've gotta reply in 24 hours or we're moving to a different opponent' and it weren't Eddie, I think it was Eddie's lawyer who said it so it's all smoke and mirrors like and then they put it out in the media, listen I'll take the Jaron Ennis fight 100%, give me the right money and the right time, I'm there, I'll fight Jaron Ennis."
Kelly's last fight was on June 6 at Newcastle Arena. He won by stoppage in the first round against Flavius Biea.
If the fight with Kelly doesn't happen, Ennis has other options. He's shown interest in facing Vergil Ortiz Jr for the WBC 'interim' world title at 154 pounds.
Ennis's move to super-welterweight opens up new possibilities for exciting matchups. Fans will be watching closely to see who he faces in his debut at the new weight class.
