Roy Jones Jr has shared his thoughts on Daniel Dubois' performance against Oleksandr Usyk in their recent fight. The boxing legend suggests Dubois could have continued but chose not to.
The undisputed heavyweight title fight took place on July 19 at Wembley. Dubois lost to Usyk, with the fight ending in controversy. From the start, Usyk picked Dubois off with sharp jabs. In the fifth round, Usyk's footwork dazzled Dubois, leaving him square for an overhand left that put him down.
Dubois got up after being counted out and walked steadily back to his corner. This led to accusations that he had quit, echoing similar claims from their first fight in August 2023.
Roy Jones Jr shared his view on the situation in an interview with talkSPORT Boxing:
"Come on, [Usyk] stopped [Dubois] in first fight with a jab. [Dubois] knows that Usyk knows he probably could have got up off the jab, but he didn't. So do you think he's gonna get up off an overhand left? Could he have? Probably, but he shown that's not the person he is, you know."
Jones' comments suggest he believes Dubois had the ability to continue but lacked the will to do so. He points out that Dubois has shown this behavior before, referencing the previous fight where Usyk stopped him with a jab.
Despite this setback, Dubois has bounced back from losses before. Many in the industry still believe he has the potential to compete with the best. His goal now will be to work his way back to another world title shot.
The controversy surrounding this fight will likely follow Dubois for some time. It'll be up to him to prove his critics wrong in future bouts and show he has the heart to push through tough situations in the ring.
