Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. got arrested in the United States two weeks ago. The former boxer faces deportation due to alleged immigration problems and an arrest warrant in Mexico.
Mexican authorities claim Chavez Jr. has links to organized crime, specifically the Sinaloa Cartel. He's now in custody and going through accelerated deportation proceedings.
Nicky Chavez, Julio's sister, spoke up about the situation in an interview with Yordi Rosado. She got emotional while defending her brother and revealing how the family's coping.
"You can't put your hands in the fire for anyone because you're not with that person all the time, but I do know that my brother is not a bad person, he's not a criminal and he's never worked for any cartel," Nicky said.
The arrest has hit the Chavez family hard. Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., the Mexican boxing legend, tries to keep a strong public image. But at home, it's a different story.
"It's hard to see my father suffer for my brothers, it's hard, it's sad. My dad is not going to cry in every place where they see him, but as we saw him at home, of course we are drawing strength I do not know from where," Nicky explained.
Despite the tough times, the family has come together. They're waiting for the legal process to play out in the U.S. and for a possible deportation of Julio Jr. to Mexico.
"We are connected as we have not been for a long time, perhaps for something bad, but we are together," Nicky shared.
The family had just started to feel hopeful again. Julio Jr.'s last fight was against Jake Paul, and seeing him happy in the ring gave them a boost. Now, they're dealing with this new challenge.
Nicky emphasized that her brother, who's dealt with addiction issues in the past, doesn't deserve to be treated like a criminal. The family's now waiting anxiously for what comes next in this difficult chapter of their lives.
